« The Effects of Light Pollution on the Animal Kingdom Security Lighting: Where’s The Guarantee »
Motion Sensors: It Just Makes Sense!Outdoor lighting is important for a lot of homeowners. If you prefer readily available lighting around the clock, motion detecting lighting may be the perfect option for you. Motion detecting lights have many benefits, most importantly they save energy and money! They also allow you to safely enter your property at night time with out keeping your lights on at all times. Although lighting has never been proven to play a role in crime prevention, many people think that by keeping their lights on all night long, they are somehow safer. Think about this though, a thief is less likely to rob you if a light suddenly illuminates his face as the approaches your home, thinking that he has been caught in the act. A homeowner who leaves their lights on a dusk to dawn type timer is no safer than if he left them off all night, yet with an average of 5 outdoor lights at 100 watts, is wasting nearly 2.2 million watts of electricity per year. This equals 2200 kilowatt hours which when multiplied by the national average of 8.5 cents per kilowatt hour comes to about $200 per year. If these same lights were put on a motion sensor, which were tripped an average of 4 times each night and timed for 3 minutes after sensed, would average about 1.095 killowatt hours per year. The savings alone is undeniable but the reduced amount of light pollution and light trespass are just as significant. Starry Night Lights even has a couple of sensors that work with your existing lights or any of our dark sky certified lights for a even better combination of outdoor lighting. The RAB Smart Lantern can be added to existing circuits of up to 250 watts of compact fluorescent lighting or 500 watts of incandescent lighting. For an even lower wattage of 180 Watts, the RAB SMS 500 can provide an energy efficient motion light that will save you even more money. There are no excuses! Motion sensored lighting just makes sense!
