Your gentleman is very much mistaken to assert that the night sky wasn't important to begin with. I imagine that modern man's lack of humility stems largely from the disappearance of majesty. We've removed ourselves from the natural world and its beauty, and even hidden away the night sky. Given its repeated mention in the texts of any number of religions, I have to imagine the night sky was a singular source of inspiration for our antecedent generations. If that blaze of glory was visible above any human city, its residents would perhaps remember their tiny place in this vast universe.

I for one have never been able to pick out the Milky Way in the night sky, and I live in a relatively rural area. It's sad to think that my daughter may never see what I can't even see.
