Italian Waste… in Utah?

Posted on March 23, 2008 by Marielle

The state of Utah is one of the most beautiful places in the world, and certainly in the United States. Some of the geographic formations that can be found in southern Utah are world famous, such as Dead-Horse Point and the Arches of Moab. Utah is also home to some of the most famous national parks in the United States, these parks include: Zion, Bryce Canyon, Arches, Canyonlands and others. Utah is also a hot spot for many current environmental issues, one of the most important of which is Utah’s role in the removal of nuclear waste.

Bryce Canyon

Recently, in mid March of 2008, a push was made by EnergySolutions to import about 20,000 tons of low-level nuclear waste from Italy, to be buried in Utah on a site owned by the company. The site is known as ‘Clive’ and is part of part of Tooele County, located 80 miles west of Salt Lake City, Utah’s most highly inhabited area. The Utah Radiation Control Board has made efforts to push federal regulators to deny EnergySolutions the license, which would enable them to bury the waste in Utah.

EnergySolutions

This site is only one of three of its kind in the nation. Thus, many individuals are also concerned about the ability to dispose of American waste because of limited area. The area may even become the sole area for burying nuclear waste from 36 states. This situation is especially severe because of the rise in nuclear energy.

Salt Lake City

The final decision for the situation is still underway. But it is clear that the need for clean and renewable energy is definitely at all time high. We at Starry Night Lights are also part of this movement, and we seek to provide our customers with energy efficient and environmentally friendly lighting, in hopes that the energy problem will improve.
