I recently read that Americans drove 4.4% less year over year. This was a drop of some 11 billion miles. This was the first drop since they started keeping these kinds of statistics... and is highly significant. It shows that the behavior of Americans can ultimately be influenced by price increases. Now, don't get me wrong, I don't enjoy paying the higher gas prices either. However, as it is encouraging consumers to look for more fuel efficient vehicles.. and hence manufacturers to produce higher efficiency vehicles... this is positive. Throw in the benefits to our environment (by reducing global warming gases) and there are some positive aspects to the situation.

I think the exact opposite. They will not improve anything all that much. The reason for the hight fuel prices is 'supply and demand' People demand to use their automobiles. 'They' have the supply of that which runs out automobiles. And since the entirety of their goal lies in profit, the price of that supply is completely dictated by how much profit they see themselves 'earning' this year.
To think otherwise is foolish and naive.

I think a more likely benefit is that the efficiency of cars will get better. With the price of gas getting this high the car companies are going to have to make efficiency changes in order to keep business going.
