Hadco Landscape Lights

Thursday, February 28th, 2008

Recent information published by U.S. and Italian scientists shows just how invasive and damaging light pollution has become. Nearly two thirds of the Earth’s population experiences unwanted light. Indeed in many urban areas it never gets dark. Even small amounts of extraneous light has huge effects – on birds, which fly into buildings; on some tree frogs, whose mating patterns are disrupted; on some hatchling turtles, which become confused; and on ALL life forms (yes, even human health is affected by light at night) when light at night disrupts critical hormone functioning. It is estimated that light pollution – as well as wasting energy – has been growing at 10% per year since the 1960s.

You can help wildlife and provide nice ambiance on your deck with this wildlife friendly outdoor deck light (HCO-GACL1) by Hadco Lighting. This fixture has a top cap and housing that are hand-formed solid copper with flamed-cut edges. This keeps light on the ground where it belongs, not up in the night sky where it is completely wasted and unwanted. The bottom, of course, is open. The fixture is 5 ” high and 3 1/8 ” wide with an antique copper finish. A xenon lamp is included.

You can sleep better at night knowing that you are not contributing to the harmful effects of light pollution upon our planet….

Attractive and Environmentally Friendly Exterior Light

Environmentally Friendly Outdoor Light FixtureThis flush wall mounted outdoor light fixture by SPJ lighting is another example of dark sky friendly lighting. It’s closed top directs light onto your property where it is needed. The solid sides reduces the amount of light trespass, where it is definitely not needed.

This light fixture can be constructed of solid brass or copper, neither of which will rust, rot, or corrode. There are many finish options for you to choose (verde, moss, aged brass, bronze, matte bronze, neutral copper, gun metal, black, rusty, autumn, raw copper, polished copper). All finishes are chemical and NOT painted or power coated for a look that will endure time.

This light comes in 3 sizes; 5 1/2 W x 8 1/4 H x 4 EXT, 8 1/2 W x 12 H x 5 3/8 EXT, 10 W x 18 H x 5 3/8 Ext. This fixture will, of course, accommodate compact fluorescent bulbs.

SPJ Lighting Rough-edged and Outdoors

Monday, October 15th, 2007

Aged Brass Outdoor Sconce by SPJ LightingThe beauty of the Intermountain West and Southwest regions of the United States is enhanced by the histories and tales of the pioneers, homesteaders and outlaws that settled these areas. And the homesteads or hideouts of these great forebears became a safe haven in the isolated and lonesome wilderness. For a taste of this long-established mountain and southwest mood, consider the easily rugged look of this brass, rough-edged wall sconce from SPJ Lighting. Exterior lighting like this can add a welcoming, homestead feel to your abode as you head home after a day of mending fences, navigating treacherous cattle drives, and surviving urban traffic.

The fixture’s mellow-though-worn styling and edges break-in the architecture of your home, kind of like how an old pair of Levi’s makes anyone feel like a cowboy. The light cast from the fixture’s edges will spread in a lively, fray-edged ring, maintaining an organic, comfortable dispersion of light around your outdoor living space.

And calm shadow is part of what makes this fixture so neighbor friendly–the is directed downward, maintaining a warm glow on your property, not offending your neighbors, whether they be residents of the next house over or the wildlife inhabiting the landscape around your desert ranch or mountain escape.

And if you remember the second verse from the great anthem of life in the west, Home on the Range, you’ll remember ‘How often at night, [that] the heavens are bright.’ This fixture makes a great selection because it’s design reduces light pollution and keeps the heavens bright, that the ‘glittering stars’ may still be enjoyed by anyone lucky enough to wander away from the city. Pictured above in Aged Brass, this fixture comes in other finishes and colors including Gunmetal Black, Bronze, Moss, Autumn and more, so that you can make your home uniquely, comfortably rugged. Check out an extensive selection of outdoor lighting that’s environmentally friendly at StarryNightLights.com.

Copper Light Fixtures For Your Home or Business

Tuesday, June 5th, 2007

Copper Light FixtureCopper, always a popular choice of material for light fixtures, is exploding in popularity this year. It seems that homeowners and builders just can’t get enough of this durable metal. What’s behind this renewed popularity? Lets take a quick look.

Natural, durable, beautiful. These are the attributes of today’s copper light fixtures.

Natural: Copper is a natural material. It has been used by civilizations throughout history because it has been readily available. In today’s homes that often make use of natural materials, copper is an ideal choice. Copper is an ideal compliment to the wood and stone routinely used in finer homes.

Durable: Copper is incredibly durable. Plain and simple, copper will not rust. Copper fixtures will pretty much last forever. Copper “patinas” over time. This is the natural aging of copper.

Beautiful: Copper fixtures are simply beautiful. Whether you choose shiny copper and allow it to patina on its own…. or have your fixtures “pre-aged” at the factory, your fixtures will add a timeless beauty to your home or business.

Exterior Lighting Trends

Monday, March 12th, 2007

Exterior Light FixtureThere have been some significant changes of late in the world of exterior lighting. Glaring glass fixtures are out. Friendly, real metal fixtures are in. Pictured to the side is the SPJ49-01 from SPJ Lighting of Los Angeles, California. This beautiful fixture is available in either solid brass or solid copper. Brass and copper are the most durable metals available for exterior fixtures. These are incapable of rusting in even the harshest environments. Brass and copper also mate nicely with the natural wood and stone used on homes across the country.
Along with durability, however, is performance. With its sloped top, the fixture is able to direct all the light it emits down to the ground. Downlighting is really the only responsible way to light. Downlighting gives improved visibility by reducing the disabling effects of glare often associated with glass fixtures. Downlighting also dramitically reduces the effects of light pollution and light trespass in our neighborhoods. Many communities have enacted lighting ordinances that require downlighting. Isn’t it nice to know that there are such attractive and neighbor friendly lighting options? You be it is.

SPJ offers a number of finish options for their fixtures. These are not paints. These finishes are created by a sophisticated chemical treatment of the fixtures that results in a sort of advanced aging of the metal. Whether you want natural copper or the seriously weathered look of verde copper . One of these durable finishes is sure to fit the bill.

Landscape Lighting Tips

Wednesday, March 7th, 2007

Copper Landscape LightDrive around for a while and you’ll quickly realize that a small handful of landscape lighting techniques drive a large percentage of designs. Done properly, these techniques will allow you to comfortably enjoy the outdoors after dark. Done incorrectly, you’ll have a yard that resembles a typical state penitentiary. Unfortunately, this is the case more times than we’d care to admit.

Let me start things off by laying down the following landscape lighting rule: You should never see the source of light. This point is beyond discussion. You should only see the result of that light ie…. a nicely illuminated area. If you see the light source, you are producing glare. Glaring lights are never good (unless, you’re trying to recreate a military checkpoint). FYI: This hold true for all lighting, including your home or business lighting. You should see the results of the light… but not the source. Unfortunatley, many landscape lighting installations get this most critical point wrong and are doomed to failure regardless of any other nice ideas they may implement.

Another point to call out is that landscape lights should typically be of very low wattages… say in the 7-13w range… 20 watts absolute maximum. If you’re lighting at the upper end of this range, you’d better have a very good reason for doing so. If not, you’re likely on your way to recreating the penatenriary look mentioned above. Bright lights and landscape lighting simply don’t go together. Bright lights tend to look overwhelming and call attention to themselves, not the elements of the landscape being illuminated. These “hot spots” just scream amateur at the top of their lumens. In addition to lower wattages, all landscape lights should be shielded or shrouded so that the light goes where you aim it… and ONLY where you aim it. This is another point that is often overlooked. A fixture may be aimed an a point of interest, but because its not shrouded, it hits that point as well as the entire surrounding area. Flooding the entire area with light simply defeats the purpose. You want to accentuate things.. and this is done by contrasting areas of light and dark. Flooding the entire area reduces contrast.

Another key point is that up lighting of trees is to be avoided. Period. I know this is a common practice, but this simply shows a lack of respect for the environment. Uplighted trees look ghoolish and ghostly, seemingly suspended in the sky. Trees are beautiful, natural objects. They are of the Earth and should be viewed as such. The connection of the tree to the Earth should be highlighted.

Finally, landscape lights should not be on from dusk to dawn. Nobody is looking at your landscape at 2:00am, so don’t waste the money and natural resources producing a display that nobody will see. Trees (like the rest of nature) need to sleep too. They are part of the day / night cycle like all creatures that inhabit this planet. They require darkness just like we do.

If you’re planning on add some landscape lighting to your property, let me recommend that you use copper. Copper landscape lights have the durability to stand up to the harshest conditions that mother nature can throw at them. The last thing you want to do is take the time, effort and expense to craft a beautiful landscape only to have it fall apart in front of your eyes in just a few seasons. Quality products made of quality materials are the way to go.

Copper Landscape Lighting

Saturday, February 3rd, 2007

Copper Landscape LightingCopper is the ideal choice for landscape lighting. Why copper? Copper is a natural metal that has a time tested immunity to oxidation. It has been used for centuries in many applications where it was vital that rust and corrosion would not affect its function. It has survived unchanged since the beginning of time — with the exception of turning a natural “Patina” or “Verde” color.

Brass is an alloy derived from copper and has the same corrosion resistant properties. Copper and brass can never rust, rot or corrode, even in the harshest outdoor environments. This is why these metals are the only choice for outdoor lighting. We’ve all seen what happens to many other types of outdoor fixtures that have been in the garden for any length of time, they have either rotted away to dust or the painted finishes are virtually not-existent.

Copper and brass are not just for “coastal environments”. In modern landscape conditions with constant irrigation, fertilizer and soil amendments, a coastal environment is created in almost every garden. It is difficult for anything to survive in such harsh surroundings; therefore you can trust copper landscape lights to remain beautiful and functional until the end of time!
